Bon Iver
“Blindsided”

I first listened to this back in February 2008. I’m not sure who directed me to this music, but I’m certainly glad for it. There’s a subdued sensitivity not only in the vocal timbre, but also in the instrumentation here. If you want to feel sad, you should listen to this. If sad music makes you happy, this song will probably make you really happy.

Enjoy, and please buy their CD!

Joshua Radin
“No Envy, No fear”

Having seen this man in concert, I can tell you he has a passion for music. Everything he performed was ethereal.

I heard this song for the first time last week, and have been sitting on it like a man who finds a piece of gold. I didn’t want to share it with anyone for a while.

Now, here it is. Buy this CD. There’s a link below.

James Morrison
“You make it real”

I stumbled onto James Morrison tonight while browsing around Spotify. After listening to the CD version, I dug around on the interwebs and found an acoustic version that I liked better. I usually like acoustic takes better. I was listening to his raspy voice, and the ease with which the music flows from him, and knew he was perfect for the blog here. There’s just so much soul emanating from this guy. He’s everything I wish I could be as a guitar player and singer. He’s so much more than just this song, though. Listen to some of his other stuff too.

Mindy Gledhill
“Bring me close”

I ran across this song while watching the Olympics. It was featured in a fruit of the loom commercial, and it’s just pure gold.

I first heard of Mindy when I was listening to Dance/House music. Kaskade sampled her song “eyes”. If you haven’t heard it you should, It’s amazing.

“Smother”

Another song I caught at the tail end. I believe it was used with a contemporary dance to help emote pain or suffering. It worked. Enjoy!

We Built This City

Aron Wright & Jill Andrews
“We Built This City”

Don’t worry, Marconi still plays the mambo. I heard this cover a few weeks ago on Grey’s Anatomy and had to post it. Grey’s is always the finder of amazing covers.

SYML – The War

SYML – The War
From the “In my Body” EP

Firstly, it’s pronounced “simmel”. Secondly, you’ll be hard-pressed to find music more heartfelt than this. Give it time, this one builds, and builds, and builds. I promise there’s a payoff near the end. It delivers.

If Brian’s voice is familiar, that’s because he was featured in music previously posted on this blog: Barcelona – Get Up. Yep, he was a member of Barcelona.

For a glimpse into the artist’s mind, here’s a particularly interesting quote:

I had to bleed and really be upset with myself to understand fully how to learn something like music. It all collided at the same time and I really latched onto writing songs at that point. You need to let go of being perfect or being the best. As soon as you accept failing at something and can give yourself up in a personal way to the music, then you can finally be light enough to reach your potential. – Brian Fennell

Once you’re done listening to the song, go watch the video. There’s raw power in this song, and the video does a fair job of extracting the last drop of emotion out of it.

His music is so powerful.
